Bow High School students receive national recognition for mobile app to map illegal dumping
March 2015 - Freshman engineering students at NH high school create GIS mobile app to map and remedy illegal trash dumping in their town.
Bow High School students have recently received recognition for the use of GIS through a mobile app they developed to help their school and community members map illegally dumped trash throughout their town. The app was created as part of a ninth-grade engineering course taught by Marcel Duhaime.
"Bow High freshmen are required to work on innovative projects focusing on engineering or social innovation. The app is a STEM-related community project that allows anyone who finds improperly discarded waste to tag it on a digital map of Bow, making community cleanup more efficient. “The key to this whole thing is at some point in your life when you figure out that there are problems out there, you have to take action,” said Marcel Duhaime."
The app has been chosen as one of the top 15 projects by the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition and has the potential to go even further (voting ends on March 25th at 11:59 EST).
