ArcGIS Online
Looking to have your students make and share maps online? Esri's ArcGIS Online provides a great balance of ease and power for your students to make engaging maps. |
ArcGIS for Desktop
Want to use the full power of GIS? Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop is the full-fledged, professional GIS software which excels at analysis with many types of data. |
Desktop vs. Online
ArcGIS Online
Many educational institutions are choosing to use ArcGIS Online due to the fact that no software installation is required and it can be used by students on both Windows and Mac computers using their Esri login (which you will set up for them). In addition, the only version of Esri's software provides an easier way in which to create and share online maps.
ArcGIS for Desktop
ArcGIS for Desktop is still widely used in educational settings due to the fact that it provides access to the full potential of the technology. ArcGIS for Desktop also can be used in concert with ArcGIS Online to create and share maps, adding additional capabilities to the online environment. ArcGIS for Desktop runs natively on Windows, but can be run on Macs via Boot Camp or virtualization software.
Can I get both?
Sure! If you want to use both ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS for Desktop in your classroom, that's fine with us. Just be sure to put in a request for each through both pages shown above.
