Summary:
ArcGIS Pro is the future of desktop GIS. All of the power of ArcMap and all of the versatility of ArcGIS Online are merging in Pro, which is now being distributed to industry and to schools.   Why would you want Pro?  If you are looking to edit data, or access LiDAR (high resolution elevation data) Pro is the way to go.  Look to the future, and  learn this new tool.
