Geospatial 101


This workshop is part of the 2017 Summer Spatial Institute

Come get your feet wet learning the technology that will allow your students to use GPS to collect information in the field and online maps to share that information.

Option 1:
    July 26-28, 2017, 8:30am to 4:30pm
    University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH

    August 7-9, 2017, 8:30am to 4:30pm
    Plymouth Regional High School, Plymouth, NH​

Summary:
Geospatial 101 will provide an introduction to geospatial tools such as GPS, GIS and remote sensing. The institute will also introduce participants to local data collection projects and local data sets. Teachers will be provided with ready-made lessons that promote spatial literacy and use GIS technology in the classroom. Content and activities will be focused towards elementary and middle-school classrooms, although adaptations for older students will also be discussed.  All activities will utilize ArcGIS Online in a web browser, which can be used on PC computers, Macs, tablets and Chromebooks.

In this workshop, we will cover:
  • introduction to GPS & GIS
  • using online maps
  • GPS navigation
  • data collection and mapping
  • exploring data using maps
  • ArcGIS Online accounts
  • collecting data with smartphones/tablets
  • finding and adding data layers to maps
  • creating maps with digital images

You will have the opportunity to earn:
  • $450 stipend from the GeoPRiSM MSP project     
  • Graduate credits from Keene State College
