Workshop with Lyn Malone! (postponed to summer 2017. Contact us.)
The ArcGIS Book: 10 Big Ideas about Applying Geography to Your World (https://learn.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-book/) is a free, online, interactive book that allows you to: “Explore ten "big ideas" that encapsulate the technological and social trends that have pushed geographic information systems (GIS) onto the Internet in a significant way. See how to apply these ideas to your own world. Open your eyes to what is now possible with Web GIS, and put the technology and deep data resources in your hands via the Quickstarts and Learn ArcGIS lessons that are included in each chapter.”
Lyn Malone and Kathryn Keranen, two of the pioneers of the use of GIS in K-12 education have written an “Instructional Guide for the ArcGIS book” (http://esripress.esri.com/display/index.cfm?fuseaction=display&websiteID=303&moduleID=0) which makes it easy to use The ArcGIS Book with your students. The instructional guide can function as a tutorial or lab manual for students to learn and develop skills--from basic to advanced--in the use of ArcGIS Online. On May 13th Lyn will be providing a workshop on the use of this resource at Hopkinton Middle High School from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. In the morning you’ll explore a couple of the chapters from the book and then in the afternoon you’ll have time to explore the topics of greatest interest to you and plan implementation with your classes supported by Lyn and members of the NHEdGIS/GeoPriSM team.
Starting this spring or early summer, the Instructional Guide will be available as a free PDF, so you can have easy access to it for your students, but attendees at this workshop will also receive an (autographed?) physical copy of the book which makes it easy to prep and plan.
Lyn Malone (above on left, shown with Kathryn Keranen, co-author of the book) is a former middle and high school geography teacher, author of numerous books designed to assist teachers with the implementation of GIS in the classroom, one of the facilitators of Esri’s T3G (Teachers Teaching Teachers GIS) institute, and coordinator of the GIS Educators day at NEARC (Northeast ArcUser Group). Several of the NHEdGIS team have taken workshops with her and always look forward to more. (Bob W even had other plans for this weekend and has changed them so that he can stay and attend!)
This workshop is funded through GeoPriSM, a math-science partnership grant from the NH Department of Education. (Stipends and hours available for GeoPriSM Participants.)
